 The Lazy Dog Adventure Club
(The legacy)

It was November 1999 and the Lazy Dog, Camillo, had been a familiar sight in Key West for years. He could be seen daily trotting along next to his owner as they cycled through town running their errands. Camillo was greeted warmly at many local businesses and restaurants, bank tellers kept dog biscuits hidden behind the counter for him and Camillo had been included in several paintings by well known local artists.

An amateur artist himself, Camillo's owner decided to design and print the original Lazy Dog logo on a shirt and stock a tiny Duval Street shop with them. The design reflected the spirit and attitude that the people of Key West lived for. It was an immediate hit. Before long, Lazy Dog had sponsored men’s league and co-ed league softball teams, and a second Lazy Dog inspired design was produced for a local kayak tour company.

After the second Fantasy Fest Parade float built by the circle of friends who had begun calling themselves the Lazy Dogs, the idea of actual Lazy Dog events was beginning to take shape. Lazy Dog founding members had many crazy adventure credits to their names including hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, sailing 16 ft Hobie Cats from Key West to Cuba, paddling kayaks from Key West to the Dry Tortugas, and dozens of road races, marathons and triathlons. The Lazy Dogs began referring to past and future adventure plans as Lazy Dog Adventure Club events.

When the Key West Lazy Dogs arrived at the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando the following year over 20 strong with runners and spectators combined, the Lazy Dog Adventure Club had been born.  Today, whenever someone has an inspiringly wacky adventure idea, the Lazy Dogs are rallied and it is called a club event.

If you would like to be a Lazy Dog Adventure Club member it’s quite simple. Gather some friends, organize an exciting adventure, wear a Lazy Dog shirt or hat, send us some pictures and we’ll put you and your Lazy Dog Adventure Club Chapter up on our web site in our New Clubs section. Many Lazy Dog Adventure Club members are dog owner and like taking their canine companions along wherever they go, work or play. Send us pictures of your pooch and we'll post them on a personalized web page just for you.

In June 2003 the original Lazy Dog founding members went into business together and opened Hurricane Hole Outfitters at Hurricane Hole Marina in Key West. They bought a charter boat which they named Lazy Dog Charters, and during their second year of operation bought out two kayak companies, Outdoor Adventure Tours where the employees had begun calling themselves the Lazy Dog Kayak Guides, and Mosquito Coast Island Outfitters & Kayak Guides. Ultimately the name of the company was changed to Lazy Dog Island Outfitters & Outdoor Adventure Company. Come visit us at the present Lazy Dog Adventure Club Headquarters located at Hurricane Hole Marina in Key West. There is a bar and restaurant, our Outfitters store, and many of the patrons and most of the employees have dogs that come to the marina every day.
