Focused on the fest
With an unending optimism, a group of about six people
spent the early part of the storm assembling a Fantasy Fest
float in an airplane hangar at Key West International
Airport.
Tourism officials announced Sunday afternoon that the
week-long festival will begin on Wednesday.
As the sky darkened and white caps were coming over the
sidewalk on South Roosevelt Boulevard the group, sponsored
by Lazy Dogs Outfitters, was still working on what will
become a 40-foot jaguar shark and a submarine.
“It's from the movie “The Life Aquatic,” said Tom
Hutchins as his brother, Dave, worked on the shark's red
gums.
“We've had a float in the parade for the past seven
years,” Dave Hutchins said. “This year, a lot of people have
already given up, but we're going to finish this.”
The unplanned departure of a private jet from a Seaplanes
of Key West hangar allowed the Lazy Dogs to use the large,
enclosed space at the last minute.
The float will include a bar, band and bathroom, while
more than 50 people walk beside it, some dressed as bizarre
creatures.
